History of the Grama Panchayat
Cheruvannur was part of the Payyormal region, situated near the historic Vadakkanad areas known for their heroic traditions. Many people in Cheruvannur were skilled in traditional martial arts inspired by the famous Kalaris of Kadathanad. The Kalaris also served as important centres for physical and sports training.
Road transportation was first introduced in the panchayat by connecting Cheruvannur with Meppayur. The present Cheruvannur–Meppayur road was constructed by filling up an existing canal.
Cheruvannur Grama Panchayat has a proud tradition of participating in the Indian freedom struggle. E.C. Appu Nambiar and E. Vasu were among the leaders who played an important role in mobilising freedom fighters during historic movements such as the Quit India Movement.
The slogan “Chathaalum Chethum Koothali” once echoed throughout the panchayat. Many people participated in the famous Koothali Farmers' Struggle, which was part of the movement demanding agricultural land for farmers.
Kottachaalil Meethal Chathu, popularly known as Military Chathu, and Malolmeethal Kannan were residents of this panchayat. They joined and worked with the Indian National Army (INA), which was formed under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose.
Most of the land in Cheruvannur Panchayat was once controlled by a few local rulers and landlord families. Later, much of this land was transferred to tenant farmers under the tenancy system, bringing the land into the hands of the cultivators.
The Chaniyan Kadavu Bridge, opened for transportation in 1983, brought a revolutionary change to the transportation facilities of the panchayat.
Cheruvannur Panchayat has also played a significant role in the cultural development of Kerala. It is the birthplace of the renowned writer Aval T. Kunjiramakurup. Although only a few of his books, including Manushyanehikal and Makadhayude Makan, were published, he also wrote numerous plays, ballads and poems.
The poet Cheruvannur P. Narayanan Nair, who authored two books, Pullankuzhal and Kavanamanjari, was another well-known personality from the region. The famous artist Kozhakodan Narayanan Nair was also a resident of Cheruvannur Panchayat.
Cheruvannur is a region rich in traditional folk songs and has a valuable cultural heritage.
